No party is complete without party food! Providing delicious food that the kids will love will really add to the enjoyment of the day. If you’re in need of inspiration here are some ideas to get the party started!
Something to nibble on. It’s always a good idea to have some nibbles for when guests arrive. Go for easy to prepare and easy to eat snacks such as veggie sticks and dips. Cut up carrot, celery, capsicum and cucumber. Popular party dips include guacamole, salsa, hummus and a cheesy dip.
Something more. After a couple of games, your guests may have built up an appetite. Mini pizzas with a range of toppings are always crowd pleasers. Why not name the different pizzas within the theme of the party. A Hawaiian might become the ‘Pirates Loot’ and Supreme might be the ‘Birthday Boy Bonanza’.
Chicken and veggie skewers (or just veggie for vegetarians) can be prepared on the BBQ. If you’re up for the challenge, home-made sushi is a party favourite. It may take a few turns to learn how to roll sushi, but once mastered, use can get creative with a variety of fillings such as tuna, egg, chicken, beef and veggies.
Something sweet. The birthday cake is often the highlight of the party. How about using a superhero figurine to decorate the cake. Or a cake made out of ice-cream. If you want to try something a little different, go for cupcakes, slices or cookies.
Something for a treat. For a few extra goodies, fruit popsicles (fruit on sticks), jelly cups, popcorn, fairy bread and chocolate crackles are low-cost and easy to make.
Something for the grown-ups. Don’t forget about the grown-ups. Sandwiches and wraps with a variety of fillings will work well, and you can also serve them to the kids.
If the party has a theme, there are clever ways to incorporate it into the catering. Don’t worry, you don’t need to be Nigella Lawson! For a fairy party, look for pink, red and white coloured foods. For a scary party, use cookies cutters of witches and ghosts to make biscuits or watermelon snacks. Or for a clown theme, a colourful fruit platter will brighten up the party.
Remember to consider food allergies and any other dietary requirements. Ask the question on the invitation and have guests let you know when they R.S.V.P
