Coming up with a guest list for any party can be a challenge. You don’t want to leave anyone out, but at the same time you can’t invite everyone. An old rule is, ask as many kids as your child’s age, plus one. However, that isn’t always possible. So how can you pull the list together?

Start by considering the following:

1 Budget The birthday boy or girl might want to invite their entire class, but parties cost money. Think about your budget. If hiring a venue, how many people can the room accommodate? If you go over a certain number of guests, you will need a bigger room, which may cost more. Another cost to consider is the catering. Calculate the cost per head and the maximum amount you can afford to spend.

2 Venue The venue will play a big part in the number of guests you invite. If you’re hosting the party in your backyard, perhaps you can fit thirty children, but what happens if it rains? Can you accommodate the same thirty children inside your home? If hiring a venue, speak with the hiring manager about maximum numbers. Venues have capacity limits for safety reasons, this will help cap off the list.

3 Grown-upsAlways remember that children will be accompanied by grown-ups. If they are planning on staying for the party, this will double your number. Specify in the invitation if you would like guardians to stay or if you have it covered. Remember you will need a carer for every ten children who attend.

4 SiblingsSometimes unexpected guests may arrive at a party, such as the siblings of the guests. If you want to avoid this, add a note in the invitation explaining that unfortunately numbers are limited.

5 Relatives So, you have the final guest list. That is, until you remember you need to invite Cousin Harry and Aunt May, oh and what about Uncle Nigel! If simply can’t include more people, think about a separate event for relatives. It doesn’t have to be another party all over again, you could have a picnic in the park and ask everyone to bring a plate of food, or host a casual afternoon in the backyard.

Always remember the party is a celebration for the birthday boy or girl. Do your best to keep them involved in the process as much as possible and of course, have fun!
